Who Is Portland? Tour
Meet a hipster in their native habitat.

The only way to truly understand Portland is to dive into its community and find the soul of its creative pulse, and we'd like to share it with you on this “Who Is Portland?” tour. This is the first and only tour in Portland that you to go behind the scenes, inside the creative hearts, minds, and makerspaces of passionate local artisans. Even though some think of this as a "Part 2" to our Best of Portland tour, it's actually a rare chance to meet and chat with inspirational artisans.

Portland has become the worldwide “poster child” for an artisan renaissance. Why Portland? Why now? On this fun and fascinating walking tour it becomes obvious that Portland’s cultural roots lie deep within its desire to help out neighbors, feel connected to our community, and incubate our up-and-comers. In Portland, terms like “local artist” and “craftsperson” are synonymous with “Portlander”. It’s simply who we are.

From among hundreds of tool libraries, workshops, makerspaces, and hackerspaces, each tour guide chooses at least four locations that are home to dozens of artisans. Current partners include the ADX Makerspace, the Portland Apparel Lab, JBird leather goods, Robert Hunter tables, Eberhardt printers, and Base Camp Brewing.

Starting Location:

  • Meet at the Hanging Water Keg at Base Camp Brewing (930 SE Oak St near SE 9th Ave)
  • Free on-street parking is available and public transportation has multiple bus and the streetcar stops nearby.

Tour Duration

  • Under 2 hours
  • Less than 1 mile

Pricing:

  • Adults $23, Seniors/Youth $18, Children 6-10 $9, Under 5 free

Flavor Street Tour

Check out Portland’s amazing curbside cuisine! Let our Resident Experts take you on a personal tour of the city’s best food carts, tasting trucks, and hidden kitchens, where former four-star chefs and other culinary entrepreneurs serve up mighty morsels on an international scale. This isn’t fast food - it’s flavor with flair, for savvy munchers on the go.

What’s up with these food carts? You’ve read about them in magazines and seen them on TV shows like "The Great Food Truck Race," “Man Vs. Food” and Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" - and you’ve seen them on the streets. We’ll show you the best - not just the best-known. Join all of Portland’s foodies on this two-hour trek of tempting tastes, from the Mayor of Portlandia to the Timbers Army. You’ll laugh all through lunch!

Eat like a local. We didn't invent the food cart in Portland; we've just perfected it. Sip, nibble, and taste for yourself as our Resident Experts (aka your personal tour guides) divulge the inside scoop on why Portlanders form block-long queues to the 400 tiny tasting trucks dotting the cityscape, serving an incredible diversity of international and creative cuisines. No longer the province of pretzels and hot dogs, our local foodivores offer flavor temptations ranging in reach from African to Venezuelan, Cajun to Chicago-style and Maine to Malibu.

Visit the best, skip the rest. With so much to choose from, it’s easy to make a mealtime mistake you’ll regret all week. Our personable, knowledgeable local expert guides will help you navigate the crowds and show you which meals are deals - and which queues to avoid. Along the way they’ll share the story behind the phenomenon that has changed city streets and parking lots into hip places to gather for a posh nosh. You’ll never look at street vendors the same way.

Underground Portland Tour
Revamped Tour for 2017 - even more terrible, horrible, no good, very bad things!

Expose the sins of Portland's past on this tour through Old Town and Chinatown! We walk through the remains of the physical underground as well as exploring the underground subcultures, political underground and immoral underground of the city's sordid history, and expose the myths behind the legends of the so-called "Shanghai Tunnels."

This walk is a treat for lovers of all things sinister – crime, scandal and controversial characters – a no-holds-barred excursion into the worst Portland has to offer.

Now With More Immorality & Vice! We've revamped this tour based on new subterranean discoveries and investigations into the worst of the illicit, naughty, bawdy, corrupt and shady activities of Portland's not-so-proud past. If you haven't been on this tour recently, you'll want to return, as we've added a large, recently excavated subterranean area with all new displays.

No Myths Or Legends Here! After walking the streets for about ¾ of the tour, we’ll hand out flashlights and delve into the subterranean levels under the historic Merchant Hotel in an area which once led to the legendary "Portland Shanghai Tunnels." And even though shanghaiing is what makes it on TV, we'll surprise you with an unscripted commentary of all of the other screwed up and scandalous things that have happened in Portland - both socially underground and physically underground.

This tour is rated PG as some material is sorrowful and certainly not for the faint of heart. There is never any foul language. If you want the ghostly haunted side of life, click here to check out a tour that is Beyond Bizarre.

Beyond Bizarre Tour
New tour with new locations! If you've seen the "Ghost Hunters", "Ghost Adventures", or "Paranormal State" TV shows, then this is the right adventure for you! Unexplained mysteries, ghostly adventures, and spooky stories abound on our “Beyond Bizarre” tour. If you like the paranormal, weird, or wacky, let us be your guide to an evening of adventure. Believer or not...people of all faiths and backgrounds, including skeptics, are welcomed.

Eventseeker rated Beyond Bizarre as "#2 Ghost Tour in the Western US!"

On this tour, we hand out real ghost hunting equipment just like that used by professionals and on TV. We then set out visiting known ghostly places and getting behind the scenes into what hauntings are all about. Unlike other ghost tours, this is a true view into the reality of paranormal investigations, the equipment and techniques we use, and how we separate the truth from the hoaxes.

All ages are welcome on our 6 PM tour or buy tickets now for our 9 PM over-18 walks where no youth are allowed so we can let loose and stop saying "here they rented rooms by the hour." No matter what, be sure to bring your cameras (and other ghost hunting equipment) as many have captured activity along the way! Both tours sell out quickly, so we strongly suggest buying in advance.

Epicurean Excursion Tour
A unique and delicious walking tour where you’ll taste the foods and sip the drinks - while discovering Portland's amazing culinary scene.

If you watch the Food Network or consider yourself a "foodie," then this exploration is for you. Portland has become a go-to destination for people who love to eat and we're the ones who will show you why. Each tour is limited in size so the experience is small and intimate.

You'll sample dozens of tastes & sips on any given tour, and while having fun, you'll also achieve an honorary diploma of culinary knowledge. You'll experience first hand (or should we say "first mouth") how fortunate we are to "eat local" and how this locavore philosophy is driving Portland's exciting food scene. Most importantly, we'll slow you down and guide you through this culinary tasting adventure as you experience the smells, textures, and tastes that every item brings.

Our Epicurean Excursion changes regularly, but one thing's for certain: you will sample from the best local artisan items that Oregon has to offer. The tour typically visits between 7 - 9 different local vendors and artisan producers in under 3.5 hours.

Tour Dates & Times

  • 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (year-round)
  • Since we keep groups very small in size, we highly recommend you buy your tickets in advance

As we visit multiple chocolatiers, we’ll guide you through 15 tastings to help you appreciate and master the subtleties of all things chocolate. This fun journey is not just for cacao lovers and closet chocolatiers - all are welcome.

The Chocolate Decadence tour celebrates the Rose City's spin on the world's favorite sweet indulgence. You'll see (and more importantly taste!) chocolate in myriad forms - be it whipped, melted, or served as a drink. Local vendors and chocolatiers will showcase their tasty works giving you a window into their world, pulling back the curtain and showing off how they satiate Portland's appetite for decadent desserts on a daily basis.

Our fun and engaging Resident Experts will outline chocolate's lineage from humble bean to tempting confection, leading you through guided tastings to help you better discover and appreciate the nuances of chocolate in its various forms and types. Be it in the form of a cake, nib, cookie, cocktail or even vinegar or salt, chocolate (and this tour) will surprise you. What's more, you'll experience it all through the lens of Portland's vibrant food scene. In a city where food experimentation, quality, and culinary expertise are so highly prized, chocolate is no exception.
